Spinal fusion

Started by gsilaski on 01/23/2017 9:45pm

If anyone is interested I would be glad to share my experience. Two months ago I had a spinal fusion at the L3, L4 and L5. I am very satisfied with the results so far. No real problems to report. I could hardly walk before the surgery and now I am walking 2 to 4 miles a day and looking forward to being back on the golf course next month. Low back pain is gone! I am off any pain medication.
If anyone could use more clinical information, I would be happy to provide it.

Thank you for sharing your experience! We are thrilled to hear about your successful spinal fusion recovery.

Did you see that SpineUniverse recently published an article about golfing after spine surgery ( Getting Your Golf Game Back After Spine Surgery )? It looks right up your alley (or fairway)!

It's great to hear a success story so I appreciate you sharing it. I'm looking at a fusion. I have no back pain but I have severe DDD and severe flattening of the disc space at L5-S1. I had a large chunk of disc removed 10 years ago (microdiscectomy). Now I have numbness and weakness in dorsiflexion both legs, outside of calf. All lower leg stuff. I also have some discoloration in my foot when I sit. Fusion is. unfortunately necessary.

I'm terrified of a fusion. I have no family in the area and having recently moved to the area have no support system.

I wondered how long you needed help for? And any tips on how to prepare?

I'm doing some reading and bought a couple grabbers, ordered an adjustable bed.

Things I"m worried about area fainting. (I get queasy easily and have a condition called orthostatic hypotension). Also how to negotiate stairs? My bedroom is upstairs.

What to expect in terms of pain? How did you deal with the constipating effect of pain meds?

And any other tips. I've been avoiding doing research until now (with numbness progressing) because of anxiety. I've heard so many horror stories......

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I actually just posted the other day because I was concerned that most of what I've come across are compilations from surgery or pain from it, so it's very comforting to know there are GOOD outcomes to this process! I have exhausted all options and it sounds like this is my best next step. I can't walk, sit or stand for any leight of time so I'm very hopefuly that this fusion van bring back my quality of life! Thanks for sharing, I needed to hear this today!! Any advice to those of us preparing for surgery or what to do/not to do after surgery?

I would love to hear about your experience. I will be getting the same three discs fused later this month and am a bit concerned about quality of life afterwards . I love to backpack and ski and am looking forward to both again after recuperation. I'm 61 and generally fit and active although about all I can manage now is a walk around the block and light yoga. How is your flexibility and strength? What types of exercises have you done to get back to good? I'm super pumped that you had a great experience!

I am getting ready for surgery in a month. I am scared to death. I am having a spinal fusion of L4 to S1 They are going to put bone in to space the vertebrae and stem cells. Then put a cage around it. My neuro surgeon said I would be braced as well. I have been off work for three months with the most horrific pain imaginable. My job is very physical and I hope I can go back after. If not I will be financially ruined. I have been diagnosed with DDD, Spondylolestysis, and stuff I can not even remember. My Lumbar MRI report is : L1 L2, Right formanial disk protrusion 8mm at base. Narrowing of right formanium. L3 L4 Mild disk bulge disc abuts the L4 nerve root. L4-l5 mild CIRCUMFERENTIAL disk bulge . Anterollisthesis results in uncovering of the anterior margin of the disk. There is a super imposed right formanial disk extrusion. Severe narrowing of the right neural foramen. Mild left neural formanial narrowing.L5-S1 Mild circumferential disk bulge. Anterollesthesis results in uncovering of the anterior margin of the disk. The disk abuts the S1 nerve root within the lateral recess . Moderate right and severe left neural formanial stenosis Grade 1 anterollesthesis of L4 on -L5 L5on S1. Mild spinal canal stenosis at these levels. Mild facet joint arthritis at L4 - S1 Mild marrow edema within the right pedicles at L4 -L5. I have been in physical therapy for three months. Had a epidural steroid shot. The shot helped some things and magnified others. Traction and ice are my best friends. My cervical MRI is about the same. So, long story longer. If anyone has any advice for pre op and post op I would be grateful to hear any and all. Excuse the spelling. I am still trying to familiarize my brain with the words.
P.S. I forgot to add my xray showed a dextroconvex curve of the thorocolumbar spine 5mm grade 1 anterollesthesis of L4 -L5 and 6mm grade anterollesthesis of L5 on S1. Gratest at l4 -L5. DDD L3-L4 through L5-S1 and good ole Arthur
