Question Regarding Lumbar Fusion Hardware Removal

Started by pchgenius on 10/16/2018 4:40am

18 months ago, I had L5 fracture from a car accident and have had 6 screws (3 on each side) in my lower back since then.

Now, I'm trying to have them removed. I know doctors wouldn't recommend it unless there are problems, but I don't wanna live with them in my body since I'm young.

My concern is:

I've heard the best timing to remove hardware is between 12-18 months post-op. However, the earliest I can see my neurosurgeon (who did lumbar fusion) is October 17th.

And obviously surgery date will be later than that. If it passes the 18 months mark (likely 19-20 months, but less than 2 years post-op), would it be too hard to remove the hardware from my spine? The bone has healed well, the doctor said when I saw him last time.

Also, I've read some posts that others have spinal curve after hardware removal. I believe since my fusion was due to just fracture, it wouldn't really apply to me. Am I correct?

Please, please, share your thoughts / experiences.

Especially, I want to find out if there's someone who had a fusion, successfully removed hardware and have had no problem thereafter.

Any comment would be greatly appreciated!
