Safe exercises

Car Accident, 2016. Broke a chunk out of T11, I think?
I'm a heavy girl and need to start exercising. One of my favorite exercises is the leg press (and also probably most needed, considering that the car accident took out most of my right knee too?) When I was doing it the last time, the back of the chair was pressing uncomfortably on the metal in my back, which became painful after too long. Can I keep doing this exercise or should I stop before I hurt myself further?
