Herniated discs and pelvic pain

Started by patient on 06/19/2011 11:50am

I am new to the forum and just had discectomy a month ago on L4L5 level. I am writing due to the bizarre nature of my symptoms and would like to ask what do u guys think about all this. Presurgery I had leg pain and pelvic pain in form of painful urination and urinary frequency as well as severe vaginal burning, all of that located only on the left side. Needless to say I haven't had sex in 3,5 years now.
Since the surgery the bladder is doing better although there is still some pain but bearable, leg is doing better but still some burning pain where it used to hurt bad.

My neurosurgeon told me that some things may never recover, so I wanted to ask has anybody had similar symptoms and how are u coping with that. I am pretty depressed over the fact that I can't have sex, even simple vaginal exam is atrocious.

Other than this I have DDD on l5-s1and a mild case of bulging, somewhat severe thoracic scoliosis but luckily no back pain. I am 29.
Thanks so much for any input you might provide.

I had a discectomy L4-L5 about 9 years ago. It affected my right hip first and the unbearable pain went down my right leg. I had surgery 1 1/2 weeks later. After surgery I had drop foot and surface numbness in my leg. The nerve that tells you where you foot is was also affected so I had to watch myself walk so I would know where my foot was. It took several months for the brain to toe nerve to recover and about two years for my leg to get the feeling back. I still have a little surface numbness but not bad.

I didn't have the pelvic pain or bladder problems. But I am commenting to let you know that it takes a long time for nerves to heal. I don't know when you had your surgery but nerves heal very slowly so things could get better. I am a 61 year old woman and I have severe scoliosis also. I wore a Milwaukee brace when I was 12 years old. I never had corrective surgery and my curve was 67 degrees after the brace was taken off. Although my back gets tired sometimes, I don't have back much pain either. I keep active, exercise at Curves 3 times per week, eat right and I feel great. I hope things improve for you and you are eventually able to have a healthy sex life. Best of luck to you.
