Broken screws in neck after 7 months.

Started by scottj11 on 07/01/2018 8:54pm

I had surgery on my neck 7 months ago and Wednesday my Surgeon said the x-ray looked like one of the screws appears to be broken. My question is, does this happen to many people?

Hi, scottj11--thanks for your question about spinal instrumentation failure. This is one of the most commonly reported complications associated with spinal fusion surgery--and we've read many personal accounts of this from members of this Community.

We have a few resources about broken fusion hardware that we think you'll be interested in:

( Spinal Surgery Complications Animation )

Learning you have a broken screw near your back can understandably cause a lot of concern, but sometimes it is safer to leave the hardware in as opposed to undergoing a second surgery to remove it. You and your doctor will make that decision together.

We hope this information helps!
