Will Genetic Testing Eliminate Scoliosis Braces

Started by Brian T. Dovorany DC on 03/02/2011 2:04pm

Scoliosis bracing is the most often form of non surgical treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
Recent studies and research performed by the makers of the scolioscore(TM) genetic prognostic test have idicated that rigid scoliosis brace treatment, most commonly the Boston TLSO brace, does not alter the natural course of the condition. So for argument sake if in fact there is definitive proof that scoliosis braces do not effect curve progression and the patient has a high genetic risk for progression to surgical levels does the course of treatment change?
If we are looking at a non surgical treatment option we would have to determine whether or not other alternative treatments like Scroth,CLEAR,SEAS etc have an effect on altering the condions natural course.Alternative surgical procedures like vertebral body stapling may also become more common. Essentially there is no point in prescribing something where the end result will essentially be the same with or without it.

Yes! Scoliosis brace treatment may be actually making the rib cage rotation worse in some cases. Here is a link that shows an "in brace" and out-of-brace 3-D CAT scan in which the scoliosis brace makes the rib hump worse....much worse.
