Complications after multi-level fusion

Started by Josh New on 09/25/2018 8:06am

Hello everyone I am 37 years old and have undergone 2 lamenectomies one in 2011 and 2015 and in August of 2017 had a multi-level fusion from s1-L3 with 2 Titanium rods, 2 plates and 4 screws. Since then I have had a severe increase in pain especially on my lower left side. It's a very sharp pain anytime I bend at all. Also swelling of my feet and ankles. Had a MRI a couple months ago and neuro says hardware is OK. I have always been active and a physical worker and not overweight. Has anyone had a good experience having hardware removed? Also I have very limited range of motion and currently on disability because I cannot do the type of work I use to do. Thank you!

Hi, Josh New--thank you for your post. We're sorry to read about the symptoms you've experienced since your lumbar fusion last year. We don't have a personal experience about having spinal fusion hardware removed, but we'd like to share a resource that describes some of the key considerations that go into the decision of removing hardware: ( Spinal Fusion Instrumentation Removal: Pros and Cons )

If you're not sure whether to proceed with the removal surgery, it may also be worthwhile to seek a second opinion to determine if the potential benefits of having the instrumentation removed outweigh the risks of having a second surgery.

We hope this information helps as you weigh this decision. We wish you the best!
