Successful spinal fusion until I overdid it

Started by JSure on 05/04/2017 1:48pm

I had a fairly complex surgery that included removing my bottom 3 disks, taking a 73 degree scoliosis to 21 degrees and fusing the next 6 disks. I was doing great, was off pain medications within 3 days of leaving the hospital, because the nerve pain was gone. I was going to PT and was truly getting stronger by the day. I had a lot weakness in my left left leg with significant foot drop.
I was feeling so good, best I had in a decade.

This weekend I felt great so I helped therewith limited yard work for the first time months. I woke up with nerve pain and an inability to put any weight on my right leg due to pain. I am so upset with myself.

Has anyone else relapsed in a similar way? Did it get better?

Thank you.

Hi, JSure--thanks for your post! We are so sorry to hear about the pain you've recently experienced. How long ago was your spine surgery? Have you contacted your spine surgeon about what happened?

While we can't say for sure, we are hopeful that your time doing yard work didn't undo all the success of your spine surgery. We recommend calling your doctor just so you can have some peace of mind.

Our fingers are crossed that this was just a bump in the road of an otherwise excellent spine surgery recovery. Please keep us posted on how you're doing!

I did meet with my follow up doctor. He verified that the fusion screws did not move and looks good. His thought it was muscle based irritating some nerves, but I have been resting and taking muscle relaxers for a week, I even went and had an acupuncture treatment, but no positive results so far.

My right buttock, right thigh, and lower right back all feel tense. Not sure what I can do to help more. Doing 20 min of ice and 20 min of heat at least twice a day.

Hard to exercise it, the nerve pain is intense.

We're thrilled to hear you got confirmation that your fusion was unaffected by your activity! Your lingering nerve pain might just need more time, but we think you should stay in close contact with your doctor if it doesn't lessen or go away entirely. Don't ignore your gut--give your doctor a call if you feel like something just isn't right. Best of luck to you!
