Removal of T5-S1 fusion hardware-Infection

Started by John Boy on 05/11/2016 5:36pm

11 years ago I had a T5-S1 fusion with instrumentation. I recently had a surgery on my back. They thought it was a cyst. It was not. It had an opening. Very painful. Not infected. A soon-gram was done to see if the "hole" communicated with all the hardware. It did not but during the surgery to remove the "hole" they found that it communicated with my sacrum. They said it looked real healthy. They did scraping off the sacrum. 3 different bacteria grew out of it. I was placed back in the hospital and had a pic line placed. Iv antibiotics. I was never so sick in my life but I am better. The doctors said that if the antibiotics did not knock out the infection I was looking at total hardware removal. I am 68 years old. Retired RN.That was my 6th back surgery. Can it be done????????
