C4-L4 Spine Fusion

Started by tammaj on 10/04/2011 8:01pm

Hello, my name is Tammie and about weeks ago I had my third spine surgery. My first surgery was about 10 years ago to fuse T10-L3 and then 7 years later they had to refuse L2-L3 because it did not heal all the way. After spending the last couple of years of severe pain I finally went to a new surgeon who discovered my scoliosis was back and my fusion from the first surgery never did heal all the way. My spine was at a 20 degree curve and the hardware was moving in my back. They did surgery 6 weeks ago and fused C4-L4 to hopefully make this the last surgery for a long time and to make the feel better than I ever have before.

I feel that this has been the hardest surgery yet and I did not prepare myself mentally for a lot of what I am going through right now. They had me very drugged at the beginning and now I am finally starting to feel like myself again. I am feeling new things in my back and they are kind of freaking me out but I know it will get better with time.

I am wondering if there is anyone out there who has been through a similar surgery and can give me any guidance I how to get through this difficult time in my life and advice moving forward to take care of myself so that I can feel normal agian and have fun as I did before this.

Thank you for your help and advice - Tammie

I had a l5-s1 fusion March of 2011. It has been a very rough road for me, much harder than I ever expected. I was definetely not prepared mentally for this at all! I am currently doing work conditioning. My injury was work related and this is a way to try and prepare me to either get back to light duty. I have been in PT for over 5 months and for me every new weird pain I feel I completely freak out. After I was taken off all narcotics I definetely felt so many uncomfortable feelings. I am currently on tramadol, celebrex and a muscle relaxor. Like you I want to move forward and feel normal again, but it is happening soooo slowly! It has caused a major strain between myself and my fiance and honestly don't know if we will make it. Long story short I'm falling apart and hope it gets better soon. Any help I can give I will, sometimes just helps to talk to someone else. I know for me it does. Knowing someone else feels what I do and that I'm just not going crazy. Keep in touch and let me know how you are doing. Take care!
